BMW 6HP & 8HP LT230 Transfer Case Adapter

Our BMW 6HP & 8HP LT230 Transfer Case Adapter has been engineered to allow the installation of modern BMW transmissions while retaining the legendary Land Rover LT230 transfer case.

On an M57, N57 or other BMW powered project it is the part that makes the transmission and the LT230 work together, so the vehicle keeps its original transfer case and low range.

Why keeping the LT230 is usually the right call

A conversion is a chain of decisions and each one that preserves an existing part is one fewer thing to source, align and maintain. Keeping the LT230 keeps the propshafts, the mounting, the handbrake arrangement and the low range the vehicle was built around. Replace it and all of those become open questions at once, and the parts you need stop being catalogue items you can order on a Friday afternoon.

It also matters for whoever works on the vehicle after you. An LT230 is a transfer case Land Rover workshops already know. A drivetrain assembled from whatever happened to fit is not.

The adapter kit includes:

Note that this kit ships with the mounting hardware, the fasteners and written installation instructions, which is more than a bare housing and gear. Everything else is outside it: no gearbox, no transmission controller, no engine mounting and no propshaft work.

Read the Adapts list carefully

Three things on that list are worth pointing out, because the page would be less useful without them.

First, it is not only a 6HP and 8HP part. There is a GS6-53 entry on it as well, so tell us which gearbox you actually have rather than assuming from the product name.

Second, the last entry, GS6-37 to Pajero 2.8, is not an LT230 application at all. If that is the combination you are building, contact us before ordering so we can confirm exactly which housing, gear and hardware your build needs. We would rather have that conversation than send you the wrong part.

Third, LT230s were fitted to a lot of different Land Rovers over a lot of years. Tell us which vehicle yours came out of along with the identification on your gearbox, and we will confirm the fit rather than guess at it.

How this relates to the rest of the range

This is the gearbox to transfer case join, and only that. It is a different problem from the engine to gearbox join, which is what the TD5 8HP adapter kit and the M57N2 to 8HP swap kit solve at the other end of the drivetrain. A build that changes both ends needs both parts.

Our complete Defender kits, the M57 8HP and the N57, already include a transfer case adapter in their specification, so buy this on its own only if you are assembling a conversion yourself.
