Choosing a conversion

Which platform, which engine

Every kit we publish is built for one platform and one gearbox combination. Start with the vehicle you already have, then read across to the engines and transmissions we build for it.

  • Land Rover Defender engine conversion

    Engine
    M57 · TD5 · N57
    Transmission
    R380 · 8HP · 6HP

    11 products · From €500

Defender 90, 110 and 130, and the deepest part of the catalogue. The BMW M57 is offered with a ZF 8HP or 6HP automatic, or with the R380 manual on 300Tdi-based vehicles; the newer BMW N57 comes with the 8HP. The same platform is also served piece by piece — bolt-in M57 engine mounts, the 6HP and 8HP adapter for the Land Rover LT230 transfer case, a TD5 adapter kit that keeps the original engine, and a galvanised chassis to build the whole thing on.

    Engine
    M57 · OM606
    Transmission
    8HP · 6HP

    7 products · From €300

Patrol Y60 and Y61, and the GU transfer case. Two routes into the same vehicle: the BMW M57 with a manual or an automatic package, or the Mercedes-Benz OM606 as a complete kit — or, if the engine is already yours, as the bolt-in mount kit on its own. The adapter that mates a BMW 6HP or 8HP to the Patrol transfer case is sold separately for builders assembling their own conversion.

    M57

    3 products · From €3,500

Discovery 1, 2, 3 and 4. One complete kit: the BMW M57 with a 6HP transmission, supplied with bolt-in engine mounts, the transfer case adapter assembly, and a complete harness each for the engine and the transmission rather than a loom spliced into the donor car.

  • Mitsubishi Pajero M57 conversion

    Engine
    M57

    3 products · From €3,500

Pajero, Montero and Shogun, Mk2 to Mk4. A complete bolt-in M57 kit that keeps the original Mitsubishi drivetrain behind the new engine: engine and gearbox mounting brackets, the transmission crossmember where the vehicle needs one, a stand-alone ECU with a plug-and-play conversion loom, and a front-mounted aluminium intercooler package. No welding.

    3 products · From €3,500

Transit MK6, MK7 and MK8 running the Ford MT82 gearbox. The kit is supplied with a fully rebuilt M57 and remakes the drive to the Ford transmission with an M57 to MT82 adaptor plate, a performance clutch package and a clutch disc cut to the MT82 spline — on bolt-in mounts, with a standalone loom and ECU.

Engine families

Why the M57 is the engine most of these kits are built around

Four engine families appear in this catalogue, and they are not interchangeable. Each one is here because there is a platform it suits and hardware we make for it.

BMW M57 — the one most of the catalogue is built on

A 3.0-litre common-rail inline-six turbo diesel. 11 of the 18 products here are M57 kits, M57 hardware or M57 engines, and every platform above has an M57 route — which is why most of a Land Rover diesel swap in this catalogue starts here. The last of the family, the aluminium-block M57N2 in its 306D3 and 306D5 codes, is the engine the standalone 8HP swap kit is built for; the earlier cast-iron engines are not compatible with it.

M57 — 11 products

BMW N57 — the newer BMW six

The newer of the two BMW sixes we build Defender kits around, offered as one complete kit for the Defender 90, 110 and 130 with the ZF 8HP automatic. It is specified to match: immobiliser solution, OBD diagnostics provision and wiring diagrams on the electrical side, and a full cooling, fuel, intake and exhaust package rather than a short list of adapters.

N57 — 1 product

Mercedes-Benz OM606 — the mechanical option

A 3.0-litre mechanically injected inline six, and our Nissan Patrol route. It is supplied as a complete kit with a Dieselmeken 8mm fuel pump, or as the bolt-in engine mount kit alone. This is where builders start when they want a mechanical diesel with room to be tuned rather than an electronically managed one.

OM606 — 2 products

Land Rover TD5 — keep the engine, change the gearbox

Not a swap at all. The TD5 8HP adapter kit leaves the Defender engine where it is and puts a Discovery 4 ZF 8HP automatic behind it, on a billet front plate, a billet rear housing and a heat-treated adapter shaft, with no cutting or welding.

Inside a kit

What a BMW diesel conversion actually involves

Five things have to be solved before an engine will drive a vehicle it was never fitted to. Each one is a block of line items on our product pages; this is what they are for.

  1. Mating the engine to the gearbox

An adapter plate or adapter kit locates the two together, and the drive between them is remade: a flywheel and clutch package for a manual, or a flexplate and torque converter for an automatic. If you are keeping the engine and changing only the transmission, an 8HP swap kit does the same job from the other direction — the M57N2 version ships with the gearbox already programmed for the application.

  2. Holding it in the chassis

Engine mounting brackets, heavy-duty mounts, chassis mounting plates, a transmission mount and, where the vehicle needs one, a gearbox crossmember. Our mounting kits are bolt-in: the engine is located on the original mounting points without cutting or welding, which is the stage of a swap that otherwise absorbs the most workshop time.

  3. Keeping the transfer case and low range

A transfer case adapter lets a modern BMW transmission drive the transfer case the vehicle already has, so low range stays exactly where it was. We machine them from billet aluminium for the Land Rover LT230 and for the Nissan Patrol transfer case, each supplied with the input gear or shaft the join needs.

  4. Making it run in a vehicle that never had it

A stand-alone engine ECU and, on an automatic, a transmission controller. A complete harness each for the engine and the transmission, rather than a loom spliced into a donor car. Then the electronic throttle pedal, the gear selector and its wiring, and an OBD diagnostics provision, so the vehicle can still be read once the job is done.

  5. Everything that has to fit around it

Cooling package and radiator hoses, intercooler and boost pipework, the air intake, fuel system integration, the exhaust downpipe, power steering integration and the fastener kit — with the installation documentation. This is the part builders under-estimate, and it is why a complete kit arrives on a pallet rather than in a box.

Two ways to buy

A complete kit, or just the part you are missing

The catalogue splits cleanly in two. Most of it is complete kits. The rest is the hardware on its own, for builders who already have an engine — or who only need the join.

Complete conversion kits

10 products · From €2,000

Engine, transmission, adapters, mounts, electronics, cooling, intake and exhaust, specified around one platform and one gearbox and shipped together. Nothing on the list above is left for you to source, and several can be supplied already built onto a brand-new galvanised chassis.

Adapters, mounts, engines and chassis

8 products · From €300

Transfer case and gearbox adapters machined from billet aluminium, bolt-in engine mount kits, brand-new BMW engines supplied bare, and the galvanised Defender chassis. Each is sold on its own, with its own fitment list and its own installation documentation.

How it works

From first question to first drive

Four steps, and an engineer on the other end of every one of them.

  1. Step 1Choose the right kit

Tell us the platform, the gearbox you want to run and how the vehicle is used. An engineer checks the fitment — bellhousing, transfer case, driveline and loom — and confirms which kit suits your build before you spend anything.

    Talk to an engineer
  2. Step 2Order and pay

Order online and pay securely by card through Stripe, or ask us for a proforma invoice and pay by bank transfer. VAT is handled for your destination and shipping is quoted for your address before you commit.

    Browse all kits
  3. Step 3Build and dispatch

Components held in stock ship straight away. Complete kits and mounted powertrains are built to order in our own workshop — we confirm the lead time when the order is placed and send photographs as your build comes together.

    Shipping and delivery
  4. Step 4Install with support

Every kit ships with our step-by-step installation video and printed documentation. If something does not match what you see on the vehicle, you can reach the engineers who built your kit directly.

After you order

Shipping, warranty and the things worth checking first

Shipped across Europe and worldwide

Small parts travel by tracked courier. Engines, gearboxes, complete kits and chassis go as palletised freight, quoted per consignment for your address before you commit. Outside the EU, import duties and clearance charges are payable by you at the destination.

Shipping and delivery

12-month warranty on every kit

Cover runs from the date of delivery against defects in material and workmanship, and it covers the kit as a system — that the parts we supplied fit together, and fit the platform and gearbox the kit was sold for.

Warranty

Ask before you order

Fitment, lead times, installation, customs and registration are answered in full on the FAQ. If the answer you need is not there, an engineer will give you one directly.
