Land Rover Discovery M57 Conversion Kit

This kit fits the BMW M57 turbo diesel and a BMW 6HP transmission – automatic or manual – to Discovery 1, 2, 3 and 4. The engine mounts are bolt in, the transfer case adapter assembly is supplied, and the engine and the transmission each come with their own complete wiring harness rather than a loom spliced into the donor car.

Four generations, one kit, one question to ask first

A Discovery 1 and a Discovery 4 have almost nothing in common beyond the badge. They are different chassis, different electrical architectures and different eras of vehicle, and a kit listed for all four is not a kit that ignores the difference. It is a kit that gets specified per vehicle. So if you are planning an M57 Discovery 3 conversion, or working on a Discovery 1 that has already been apart for a year, the useful first step is not adding to basket. It is telling us the generation, the year and what is in the vehicle now, so the specification is settled before anything is machined.

That is genuinely the honest answer, and it is the one worth having. Anyone who tells you the same box of parts drops into all four without a conversation has not thought about it.

Two harnesses, not a splice

The detail worth noticing in the list below is that the engine and the transmission each have their own complete wiring harness. The alternative, and the usual approach on a home conversion, is to cut into the donor car’s loom and adapt it. That works until the first intermittent fault, at which point nobody, including the person who built it, can say with confidence what any given wire is for. Two purpose made harnesses plus the engine ECU and the transmission control system mean the electrical side of the conversion is a known quantity you can hand to somebody else.

Integration components means integration components

Four entries on that list use the word integration: cooling, fuel, exhaust and the brackets. Those parts are made to join the new drivetrain to the systems already on your Discovery. They are not a replacement cooling system, a replacement fuel system or a complete exhaust. What is already on the vehicle therefore has to be fit to be joined to, and a radiator or a fuel tank that was already marginal will still be marginal afterwards.

Also not included: propshafts, the transfer case itself, and anything structural. The M57 engine mounts we sell separately are listed for Defender chassis only, so they are not a substitute for the mounts in this kit; the bolt in mounts for a Discovery come with the kit.

Before you order

Four things settle most of the specification: which Discovery generation, the year, whether the vehicle is currently manual or automatic, and what engine is in it. Add whether you want the 6HP as an automatic or a manual package, because this kit is offered both ways.

For a Defender rather than a Discovery, the equivalents are the Defender 6HP kit and the Defender 8HP kit. If you already have a vehicle and only need the engine, we supply brand new M57 engines on their own.
